## Clock Movements

All clocks need some sort of power to run them. This power can come from a [battery,](https://www.clockworks.com/clock-movement/quartz-clock-movements-time-only.html) or [electricity,](https://www.clockworks.com/clock-movement/replacement-electric-clock-motor-movements.html) or a [clock weight](https://www.clockworks.com/clock-parts/mechanical-grandfather-clock-weights.html). It might even be a wind-up [mainspring](https://www.clockworks.com/clock-parts/clock-movement-hole-end-mainsprings.html). [Clockworks.com](https://www.clockworks.com/) provides clock movements with each of these power options.

### Clock movements for creations

To build a clock from scratch, all of the components are needed. A movement, a clock dial (the face of the clock with the numbers), a set of Minute and Hour hands, and maybe a Second hand. A pendulum might also be needed, depending on the version of movement selected. Let’s not forget the clock case!

### Choosing the method of power

Most important, first choose your power source. Each style of power is completely different and will take a completely different type of movement. For example a [battery powered](https://www.clockworks.com/clock-movement/chiming-pendulum-quartz-clock-movements.html) versus a [weight driven](https://www.clockworks.com/clock-movement/hermle-clock-movement.html) unit. Each requires a totally different mind set and approach.

### Selecting the movement

Once you have chosen the power source, it is time to explore the options within that category. There maybe be options for having a [pendulum](https://www.clockworks.com/clock-parts/german-mechanical-clock-pendulums.html) or a chime. [Clockworks.com](https://www.clockworks.com/) will gladly help you with your project.
